Day 4 – 17/05/2010 New York

Posted by Liam

Downtown New YorkI went to the United Nations head quarters but unless you go on a tour you can’t actually see anything worth seeing. The next tour was in a couple of hours and I’m not a fan of waiting so gave it a miss. My room mate waited around for it and was quite disappointed so I’m definitely glad I didn’t wait.

One of the ‘must do’s’ of New York seems to be going up the Empire state building or the Rockafella center. I opted for the Rockafella center. I really didn’t want to pay $20 to go up there but it was definitely worth it. You get shot up the elevator and your ears pop. I got out of the elevator to see the view from a window. It’s amazing. The pictures don’t do the experience justice. I stayed there as it was getting dark and that was a completely different but equally brilliant view.

I finally went back after staying up there for what must have been a couple of hours. I’m not sure where the time went.

Day 3 – 16/05/2010 New York

Posted by Liam

The Statue of LibertyI had a walk through central park to the Guggenheim Museum. I’m clearly not posh enough to ‘appreciate’ the Goog. You need to be the type that sits and stares at a painting of nothing for 20 minutes umming and arring. That said, there were a few Picasso, Rembrants and Van Gough’s that were nice enough.

I headed for the south pier, managed to walk out the subway station accidentally (rather than catching the connection I should have caught) but got some food in a nearby cafe/deli. By food I mean a cinamon bun as big as my brain (but messier) and an iced coffee. I hate coffee. It wasn’t intentional but the girl couldn’t understand me. To be fair I didn’t make her life easy as I hadn’t a clue what I wanted. It was a bit confusing.
I made it to south pier and got a ferry to Staton Island. Its a free ferry that goes right by the Statue of Liberty. Perfect for grabbing a few snaps. Staton Island wasn’t really worth seeing so I walked off and right back on the next one leaving 60 seconds later.
I came back and walked through Wall street. Saw the NY stock exchange, the Trump Tower and Tiffany’s and wandered on to Pier 11 because it has a nice up and down the river.
Walked back and found a ‘pharmacy’ – the closest thing to a super market. Had a walk around it and picked a few things up. Noticed a guy was grabbing some of the packet cake type things and I asked if they were any good. He said “Yeah, I love them. I can’t get enough of them” and walked off. I grabbed a couple and he walked past, sans cakes. He’d just shoved them down his trousers. He went on to say he lost his job and “a man has got to eat” and said have a good day. I laughed and left him to it.
I tried to find the Thai place Eric and Melissa told me about but I couldn’t find it. It turned out I was on the wrong road but I did find another and it was lovey. The lady kept giving me ice cream – what’s that all about?
I wanted to catch a baseball game so bought tickes for next tuesday to see the Yankess vs Red Sox. It should be fun.

Day 2 – 15/05/2010 New York

Posted by Liam

I woke up early and headed outside to be welcomed with sun and heat. The first I’ve seen this year really. I’d forgotten what it was like.

I walked around Manhatten for about 9 hours. My feet hurt but I had to start getting used to it. I walked througth central park as its about 30 seconds away – it seemed wrong not to. I was only in there a short while but it was enough to realise how big it is. It’s big, really big. I came across a kids playground – it was huge. It puts ours to shame. I wish I had one of those as a kid. No roundabouts though so they’re still missing out.
I got off the subway in the Rockafella centre station. It took me 20 minutes to work out how to get the heck out of there – it’s a labyrinth!
I thought I’d head toward Times Square (it had to be done) and came across a huge market on 9th street. The street (or at least a sizable part of it) was blocked off. I didn’t see all of it, there was just too much to see.
I came across the NHL store and thought I’d pick up a top. My original plan was to get a sports top from each city I went to but it would be extremely costly. The ice hockey jerseys started at $120. My problem was – which team would I go for? How do you pick a team / city when you have absolutely no affiliation with any of them.
I ended up with a New York Rangers jersey. a) I was in New York, which is more than I can say about any of the other teams. b) The logo doesn’t change so it wont be outdated any time soon.
Times Square was quite interesting. Massive displays on the sides of the buildings made everything bright and lively. As per usual however, any famous tourist destination is full of tourists! They were like ants scurrying around. There was a Toys ‘R’ Us there with a bluddy merry-go-round in it! Madness! There was also a M&M’s store. Some how they managed to come up with enough M&M crap to fill 3 levels.
I wandered to the world trade centre site and over heard a few of the tours going on around me which were quite interesting. It’s smaller than I thought it would be. I imagined a gigantic hole (or two) but it was just a fairly big construction site. The plan is to create a single smaller tower and a two memorials at the site of the original towers. There was a couple of guys almost preaching about the 9/11 conspiracy. It was quite entertaining and rubbed a lot of Americans up the wrong way.
I had a wander to Battery Park and the water front and had my first glimpse of the statue of liberty. It was quite a nice experience.
China Town was interesting although I was definitely a minority.
Little Italy was also nice, lots of nice restaurants.
I came across Washington Square Park , a small park but had some fantastic street performers.
A day full of touristy stuff done!

Day 1 – 14/05/2010 London to New York

Posted by Liam

VS045 - LHR to JFKStart spreading the word… I’m leaving today…

After about 4 hours sleep (there’s always more to do!) I got up, showered and double, triple and quadruple checked that I had money, passport, phone and ‘stuff’ I headed off to Sheffield train station.

I grabbed my train and found that the reservations were all over the place and I started wondering if I was actually on the right one – as I normally do.

Anyhoo, after my brand new bag falling off the luggage rack (turned out it bent the metal supports and essentially broke it :-( ) I arrived in London. I worked out a route on the underground which matched the advice from a customer services lady in Sheffield station and got on the ‘Heathrow Express’. As I showed the ticket collector my ticket he kindly informed me that it wasn’t valid for this service and I should have got some other underground train via some other labyrinth of stations – £25 please. Ace. £25 for a 10 minute journey.

I made it to where I needed to. I checked in on a crazy machine and picked my seat, handed my bag in and wandered off to the duty free until I boarded.

The flight was uneventful – probably a good thing. 7 1/2 hours in to New York JFK. Went through immigration/security and was slightly nervous. I had to previously change my route just to make sure I made it obvious that I was leaving the US after 90 days and they could turn me away and send me home if they weren’t satisfied. I got put in a queue with a friendly looking old man immigration officer until I was beck end by a middle aged, tall, bald ‘hard ass’. I thought I’d at least say hi, how are you doing? to which I got a grunt in reply. After scanning my right fingers, right thumb, left fingers, left thumb and no cavity search he let me through – to great relief!

I didn’t have too long to wait till my luggage popped out and I grabbed the airport mono-rail like train thing, two connections then the ‘A train’ all the way to my stop, 103rd street. It felt like it took an age and was a little weird taking it all in.

When I finally got to my stop, it was the first time I’d been out in the open. It was dark now but warm. I stood on the corner with central park across the street from me and to the sides a never ending road with buildings on one side and the park on the other. I think it finally hit me that I was here.

My hostel was very close so I got my room sorted, a two bed dorm with just me, myself and I in it. A nice surprise as I’m sure I paid for a 4-6 bed dorm.

I went on the hunt for some food and the adventure begun.

Imagine every tv show, film, picture, the image that pops in to your head when you think of New York. Well, this was it. To the letter. It was surreal. I didn’t expect it to fit the stereotype so well. I wandered down a street with grocery stores, burger places and loads of retro hair dressers. It was hard not to over hear people talking and when you hear things like ‘..and the little one, well he was like a dog on heat humping my leg’ it’s hard not to snigger a little. Everyone was there own little comedy show.

I walked up and down a few blocks a couple of times until I found somewhere where I didn’t think was going to kill me and grabbed a ‘posh burger’. They definitely didn’t use a George Foreman – I got 3rd degree burns off the puddle of grease that dripped off.

As it was my first evening there I thought it was only right for me to go find a bar (again, one that I wouldn’t die in). I went to 999 or 777 or something along those lines. A small but nice place. I’m not one for drinking on my own but I had to get used to it. I ‘got carded’ (ID’d) but I needed to get used to that too. If anyone looked under 30, they expect it. So I guess I’ll have to expect it for about 20 more years with my baby face!

I got talking to a lovely couple by the side of me, Eric and Melissa. They basically drew all over my map with places to go, things to do, stuff to eat. Turned out quite useful in the end.

I got back to my hostel and found a random in the other bed. It turned out to by a really nice Mexican guy called Carlos.

Carlos, who I found out the next morning… likes to get up early. Just what I needed to recover from jetlag.

Liam’s Travel Blog

Posted by Liam

Well, here it is. My travel blog.

I did intend to put one up a while ago and I started developing one (I’m a geek like that) with a snazzy route map but paid work had to come first and it never got finished.

This has been hastily put up but should hopefully do the trick.

The purpose of this thing would be to keep track of where I am and what I’m doing between the 14th of May till the 21st of September in North and Central America. I’m going to aim to write at least something every day. It probably won’t happen and if it does it might be a few days behind but who knows.

I can’t write so don’t expect any of this to be coherent. If I manage to keep this semi up to date then it will be a minor miracle. I generally put stuff like this off but it’s going to be so much easier than emailing everyone individually. Yes, I have heard of CC’ing but that wasn’t the point…

Anyhoo, there are a few links at the top for subscribing to this via email and similar so feel free to do so.

For the record, no I didn’t write this on the 14th of May but I’m having to fudge the first week of entries to keep them in order and catch up with them.

Ciao, Liam
